Deep Dive Masterpost pt. 2 - Twitter
A bit harder than Instagram, but thanks to the power of advanced search commands and alternative frontends I was able to find some fun stuff (mostly with AC/Dojo Bros). Tagging @mobiblackout, @btybbcedes, @sadiesm, @christiancagesupporter, and @moxapologist (again) + @fatal-3nvy (for the single Taven pic, according to Mobi) for under-the-cut shenanigans (again!)

Tuesday 12th December 2023
End of September: I quit my first proper tech job after 2 years.
End of October: I applied for university on a whim and got a place.
Start of December: Randomly got a new tech job without searching.
God blessing me left, right, and center?! That's just a summary of what's been happening the past few months. I will go into more detail below~!
Here are some tips for talking to people on LinkedIn: post 💕
If you're wondering how I got here in terms of my coding journey: video | post 💕
Tumblr media
End of September
I quit my job because it was getting tiring and I couldn't see any chance of me developing there. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to do my apprenticeship with them and then go on to become their Jr Web Developer - but from there, everything felt static. When the projects being given were getting absolutely boring, I knew then I needed some kind of change. So, I just quit. I said on a Monday I was quitting and that same Friday, I left. Politely and respectfully, of course.
Tumblr media
End of October
I was so random how I did this but my Dad suggested for me to apply to university. I told him I didn't even have the right qualifications they wanted. He said "Bet". We looked at the local universities and none mentioned any apprenticeship certifications but mentioned work experience in the field. I applied with that knowledge. Wrote the cringiest personal statement about why the universities should accept me - and it worked. I got into the university of my city which seemed super prestigious to me, 18-year-old me would be screaming that I got a place at the university that I deemed for super smart people.
I made a post about it: link 💕
Tumblr media
Start of December
My plan now was to wait until university next September 2024. I planned to relax, level up my current skills by myself or helping via volunteering, and maybe get a few certificates (because I love my name on certificates), and, most importantly: catch up on some anime shows - which I did complete:
Ushio & Tora: 2nd Season
Hunter x Hunter
Vinland Saga
JOJO Part 5 (again)
Jujutsu Kaisen 2nd Season (still watching)
Basically, I was supposed to relax until around February time, then start looking for a new job - tech or non-tech.
!! At this point, I was not looking for a new job !!
Last Tuesday I got a message from a recruiter on LinkedIn saying my profile was cool and would love to help me get an interview for a Frontend Software Engineer position in the city. I had a hunch to tell him I was okay and wasn't looking for a new job right now, but I was getting bored recently and this to me was an exciting new thing to do, so I said yeah why not!
The meeting was on the following Thursday and I met the IT manager. He liked me (same back to him) and wanted me to meet the team next Monday (yesterday). Afterward, I was feeling "Oh wait this is getting serious, I'm only here on a whim, like I'm actually doing good?" so I thought "Okay let's make an effort on the next 'interview'!!".
Monday came and I met the funniest set of people ever in a tech team. Then I thought "Lowkey highkey... would be so cool to work here~!" and the feedback I got was really positive. I got the job. Today I talked to their HR to finalise things.
Tumblr media
All of this is thanks to the Almighty God, Lord Jesus, and the Holy Spirit of course~~! 🥰🙏🏾☦️

13/12/2023 || Day 114
I feel like it's been forever since I touched VS Code. Basically, I gave my manager my phone number so that I can get some extra shifts in, and it's worked like a charm (which is honestly a life saver given that Christmas is coming up)! But because I've been at work most days, I haven't done any coding on those same days because I get home feeling really tired. I was also getting some back headaches and my eyes were starting to feel weak last week, so taking those extra shifts really helped me stay away from a screen (the benefits of working in retail). Today I had a day off, so I jumped back into my Frontend Mentor project and made some progress!
Frontend Mentor REST Countries - Log #5
I decided to tackle a problem I had and I fixed it! Basically, I'm passing the name of the country the user clicks on through the url, but any time the page refreshed the component wouldn't load with that country's name from the parameters, and the page would break. I basically "solved" it by storing data on all countries in local storage and fetching it from local storage and placing it in a variable, instead of constantly passing information up and down various components. I would explain more, but I honestly can't remember much else of what I did to solve it. I also spent today working on the mobile view for the country page and I think it's all good, though you'll have to ignore the orange background, I forgot to delete that line 😂

I promise I'll stop with my aging anticapitalist yells at cloud type posts after this one but like. Hear me out.
So I've been trying to wean off Audible for their accursed business practices, right? And I use Libby but 10 audiobooks only lasts me like 1 week if I pick long ones, so I'm like some kind of library werewolf who only borrows digital content for the full moon or someshit, ok?
So until my beloved wife NewPipe comes back from the war I've been listening to yt on Firefox, right? Well.
Yt is so determined to enshittify that if you don't disable the yt app (because you can't uninstall it which IMHO means it's officially, inarguably and forever bloatware now) it will open the app instead of the webpage with so little fanfare that if you aren't intentionally watching for it you won't even notice the window shift.
And like. I'm watching like 90 minute lectures from random professors from schools I'll never see giving talks to like 10 people in forgotten university backrooms or for like the anniversary of some church regarded as architecturally significant or as part of winning academic awards I've never heard of etc.
Some of these videos are from like 2013 and you can almost garauntee the speaker uploaded it or agreed to have it filmed + uploaded specifically because they wanted more people to hear their presentation than could or would be present when they originally made it. When you're nerdy about something you usually want to share it, these aren't YouTube Personalities(tm), they're sharing the obscure joys of their phD with losers like me who can't go to school.
You have to wonder if they would have chosen a different platform or gotten a website of their own to put it up on or something if they'd known their lectures, and I mean some of them are putting up entire 10+ hour courses recorded in their own classrooms for FREE solely because they wanted to and could, would become so thoroughly affected by corporate bullshit.
Most lecturers promoted nothing or at most namedropped their own book like once, but their work is now so thoroughly ad-ridden and Schrodinger's paywalled* as to become unwatchable without a bit more spite and tech flexibility** than should be required when the whole point was to share the fucking thing.
Some of those who uploaded content have long since stopped, whether because they've already put up everything they wanted the public to see or because, and in some cases some of them were not at all young in 2008, they've gone on to the big classroom in the sky. Which makes retroactively barriering something they taught freely seem awfully ghoulish if you ask me.
* You know how like, you technically CAN watch videos free on vanilla yt but you can't minimize the window or do anything else with your screen while they're playing? That's the kind of scumbag plausible deniability I'm calling Schrodinger's paywall.
** While it doesn't require much tech savviness to switch to ff or use a frontend for yt, the fact that it requires any at all goes against the spirit of sharing. Your grandma's grandma who remembers party landlines and had to be cajoled to even get a flip phone should be able to ask you "Can you show me that video again with the nice young man talking about the Odyssey?" (the young man is in his 60s) and watch it on a 1995 tower pc with a CRT monitor if she damn well pleases.

Hey sreegs, maybe this is a long-shot... but do you have any advice for someone trying to get into the tech industry (aside from don't - ive heard this one before) for someone relatively new to coding and stuff?
do some research on what you want to do and get started in a relevant language. i used codecademy but there's plenty of other places that offer courses. swift for iOS, java/kotlin for Android, js for web frontend, python, java, etc for other backend services.
you're gonna be learning the basics but start somewhere. there comes a point where you start to just "get" coding and then it becomes easier to learn other languages. while they all may have something unique about them, a lot is the same. stuff like control flow, objects, types, nullability, etc, they all deal with those things in some way. there's a big difference between compiled languages and interpreted languages, but that won't matter much to you at the beginning
if you hate coding after trying to learn it for a month or two you're gonna hate it forever

Tips & Tricks Tuesday: "Archive" tasks easily based on the name
Tumblr media
Sometimes you're just done with a project. Archiving lists is a nice way to hide them (and their tasks) when you are putting them away for a while—or forever!
However, if things are a bit more in flux for you, you will appreciate fant's tip about showing and hiding lists/projects based on a special character in the name.
It happens that I want to give some of my currently actionable projects (lists) a rest. Okay, I have to confess that this is rather selfish - I want them to not bother me, so I can concentrate on the more important projects/stuff (if there's any). On the frontend, I have a very simple setup. On the backend, it's more complex thanks to the mighty Smart Lists. Below I show only the necessary parts, but it should be easy to implement this in any setup. Setup: Lists My list for 'one-off tasks' is named '+' (yes, only a +). All projects (in this case, lists) which are active start with a '+'. (for example: +Conquer.The.World) All Projects/Lists which I want to put in a dormant state, but don't want to archive, start with a '>'. (for example: >Conquer.The.MilkyWay) Thus, simply by editing the list name, the tasks in those lists become active or dormant. The lists themselves are not out of sight. For example, when doing a weekly review you can resurrect dormant projects simply by replacing the '>' with an '+' and vice versa. The sort order of the lists is alphabetical, so the active projects are separated from the dormant ones. Setup: Smart Lists The simple thing is to start every Smart List which should show only active tasks (tagged 'desk', 'home', and so forth) with: listcontains:+ AND ("here comes and the rest, what suits you best ") (for example: listContains:+ AND tag:desk AND tag:next) Effect As mentioned above, only tasks in active lists (starting with a '+') will be shown. Nothing else needs to be changed. Drawback Due to the fact that there's no syntax like 'listStartWith:', the names of dormant lists should not have a '+' in their name. For example: >Conquer.The.MilkyWay_+_Conquer.The.AndromedaGalaxy will not work. I've tried, but I had to surrender :-( That's all. Hope it's of use to anyone.
Thanks for sharing this tip, fant! You’re our Tips & Tricks Tuesday winner this week.

I would be very cautious about recommending Ellipsus. For one, they are a company with a commercial product. It is not open source or even open core. Like any company they will go how the wind blows.
It's also unclear (at least without signing up for the beta) if they are making a local editor that does some online things, that you will be able to buy, or if they are making a service you have to subscribe to forever (once the free beta ends) in order to use.
They also bungled the above post, showing Brave and Vivaldi as "Search engine alternatives" when they are browsers not search engines. The blog post is correct (now anyway), and show them in the browser category, along with Firefox and others. Including DuckDuckGo, which does have a browser, so the picture above was probably just mislabeled. But beyond that, all the alternatives they recommend and the way they recommend them seem to show a shallow understanding of the topic. Like, yes you can write in Obsidian, sure but it a large and complex note taking/knowledge management system. And that might actually make sense, especially if writing a large, complex story with lot research, etc. But they don't really address that, they just say you can write with it. And then try to make it sound bad in comparison to themselves by saying "However, it does have a steep learning curve, limited collaboration, and minimal formatting." Yeah no shit it has minimal formatting, it is note app not a writing or publishing app.
They likewise fail to bring any real detail to the browser alternative category, not mentioning that e.g. the DDG browser is a low-effort Chrome frontend (unlike high effort Chrome frontends like Brave or Vivaldi), or that Firefox is about the only non-Chrome-based browser left standing (Safari is sort of the ancestor of Chrome, not Chrome, but is not ported to non-Apple platforms, and has rather stagnated lately. Other non-Chrome-based browsers amount to rounding errors). They also recommend Tor browser... look Tor is great, but the average person is probably not going to enjoy using it for day-to-day stuff for a variety of reasons. It is designed for secrecy, privacy and security above convenience or user-friendliness. If you want to use Ellipsus, and you can find out what the post-beta business model is, and you are ok with that (product or subscription), go for it. But understand the limitations and be aware that the company doesn't seem terrible serious about worries that "Break up with Google" might imply, they are just riding a trend and one that happens to give people a reason to use their product at that.
Just in time for Valentine’s Day... 💔
Ready to break up with Google?

So are we!
We’ve rounded up a bunch of privacy-centric alternatives for everything Google.

Lazy loading for images
Minimized JavaScript/CSS

The result? Sites that load in under 2 seconds and retain more users — giving businesses a competitive edge.

06/09/2023 || Day 75
Oh god, I feel like it's been forever since I did some programming even though it's really only been 5 days. However, apparently that was a good enough break for me because I feel rejuvenated and was able to consume more knowledge on programming. So, here's a quick list of things I accomplished today:
Did a refresher on the Bubble Sort and Insertion Sort sorting algorithms, since it's been a few months since I touched their implementation
Continued on with Node.js tutorial videos
Started mySQL videos (specifically, how to use it with Javascript and Node.js)
Abandoned the mySQL videos/topic after 20 mins and decided to get my hands dirty with actually using and connecting Node.js to a frontend client. Will do this with API calls
Realized I didn't want to have to constantly install npm packages when I switch between my laptop and my PC, so I started watching a tutorial on Docker
All in all, I did a bunch of random programming-related stuff today, but didn't delve deeply into any one topic. Tomorrow I plan on actually using Docker to set up a new project that will use Node.js to deal with server stuff and React to deal with the client-side UI. It's gonna be a small project, but hopefully it'll be fun! Will post more about it tmr.

THE REASON : "A HUGE QUEUE ALMOST 3000 ENGINEERS GATHERED FOR INTERVIEW"
As per the google analytics, approximately over 1 Million students graduate every year in India. And the number gets increases day by day. Recent news showed over 3000 ENGINEERS went to a Walk-in-Interview in Pune. God knows how many got selected, how much time they had to wait over there. Under what circumstances they reached there, what salary package they got (who were selected).
What is the reason behind the HUGE CROWD? As per the number of Graduates every year. Not all of them opt for Post-Graduation, therefore they do require jobs. Now when any Organization comes for Campus-Placements. Let's take an example of any ABC Organization which is a Manufacturing Industry. They are looking for Engineers, IT Workers or Developers or Backend - Frontend employees. Now let's say maximum number of openings they do have is 7 including all the departments and requirements. And the number of Graduates/Post Graduates/Under Graduates (who are pursuing in final year) And in most of the cases now days students from other campuses (In the case of JOINT CAMPUS PLACEMENT DRIVES), the total of these students ends to approximately 300 and the vacancies were 7 (Which is only 2.33% of total students applied for same organization). Now who is responsible for this mess? This HUGE CROWD? • College? NO. Why? Because college needs to place their students so they will conduct drives and the interviews in their college and will surely make those Placement Drives compulsory for students.
• Organizations? NO. Why? Because Organizations have come from far away and they are spending their time, therefore they are looking for best and they cannot bear the risk of choosing 7 students just from 50. Because they are not sure if they can get talent in this number which they are looking for?
Then who is the real culprit here?
The reason behind this mess is LACK OF AWARENESS in students. Who are just depending for their career on everything. They have hope for their jobs in College, they have hope for career in their parents, they have hope for their company for long term in their friends. Poor Students, they don't even know Colleges can help students to appear in some of the best organization's interview's but they need to give their best by their own. They don't know their parents somehow can pay their fees but they are not able to choose a path for their career. As there is a huge generation gap and they don't know what is in Trend nowadays. They don't know that friends can be their families, lifetime buddies but can never stay their colleagues forever. They cannot do job with their friends at same place for long time.
So this is the main reason of HUGE CROWDS in Interviews nowadays. As students are not aware of Who they are? What they want? They don't even know Why they are going to give the Interview.

Software of the Week: WingetUI / UniGetUI
Keeping all of the programs on your computer up to date is important for security reasons; just ask LastPass, the disgraced password manager that got hacked because an employee's personal computer was running an old version of Plex Media Server. The particular vulnerability that the hackers exploited had been patched almost 3 years earlier, but because the employee never bothered to update Plex, he never got the fix.
Every month that you leave software on your computer un-patched is time in which hackers may discover the vulnerability and start using it to attack computers. But how on earth can you even figure out which of your programs need updates? Doing that one by one takes forever, and THEN you still have to actually install those updates.
This is where software updaters are essential. On Windows, SUMO used to be among the best programs for the job, but it was discontinued in early 2024. I've been searching for a replacement for a while now, and I finally settled on WinGetUI (soon to be known as UniGetUI). A LOT more detail and some tips are under the readmore!
Details:
Purpose: Provide a unified frontend for multiple package managers on Microsoft Windows to simplify installing and updating software
OS Supported: Windows 10, 11
Installer Size: 76 MB
Country of Origin: Catalonia/Spain
Languages Supported: 16 languages fully, 24 partially
License: Freeware

A LOT more detail and some tips are under the readmore!
Winget ("WIN-get") is the name of Microsoft Window's new-ish package manager, a program that itself takes care of installing and updating other software for you. Linux and Unix have had built-in package managers for decades, but Windows has been sorely lacking on that front until just recently. Winget provides the ability to install and update software, but it's a command line utility, meaning you have to type text into a command prompt in order to get winget to do anything for you.
WinGetUI is essentially just a nice interface using winget in the background; it shows you which programs you have installed, which ones have updates available, and it will even install the updates for you. That last part was a game changer for me personally as it saves me a lot of time (I have a LOT of programs and libraries installed on my computer).
The best part is the developer has added support for other package managers too. Computer language SDKs often come with their own package managers for downloading the little libraries that you can bundle with code that you write, and WinGetUI now supports most of them: npm, pip, .NET Tool, Chocolatey, scoop, Powershell Gallery, and it can even list software installed from the Steam shop or the Microsoft Store (though it can't update those ones for you). Incidentally, this is why the name is changing from WinGetUI to UniGetUI; it now supports a lot more package managers than just winget.
WinGetUI can even help you migrate software to a new computer. Simply install WinGetUI on your old computer, export a list of all of the software you have installed, then install WinGetUI on your new computer and import that list and then click install. You'll probably have to babysit it for a while because Windows will prompt you to give admin access to the installers that need it, but hey. At least you don't have to write down all the software you have and download and install each one by hand.
I do want to highlight that Microsoft is still working out the kinks in winget. Windows has existed for a long time and provided a lot of freedom in how you could install software. Multiple companies have made their fortunes just by providing custom installer software for Windows (InstallShield and NSIS being prime examples), so Microsoft has their work cut out for them trying to get all the different software manufacturers to list their software in the winget directory AND standardize their installers.
As such, you may run into issues like these:
WinGetUI lists a program you installed manually and tries to update it via winget; the installer succeeds, but because those installation methods are different, you end up with 2 copies of the software installed in different locations
WinGetUI fails to update a program because the hash of the downloaded installer doesn't match the hash that winget says it should have. This is usually a developer error
WinGetUI fails to determine whether some programs have updates available or not
WinGetUI downloads an installer/updater but it fails to run because it detects that the installation methods for that program are different (manual install vs. winget install)
Almost all of these can be resolved by uninstalling the manually installed version and reinstalling it using winget, either from the command line or just from WinGetUI. Once you do that one-time operation, the winget package manager (and by extension WinGetUI) should be able to handle everything from there on out. It will only get better too as winget usage becomes more common among software developers.
